Overview
The Allurion Program is a medically backed, all-in-one weight loss solution combining a swallowable balloon, coaching, and digital tools. While the physical device and coaching were strong, the mobile app needed to be reimagined to create a more seamless, supportive experience across the user’s journey—from health tracking to clinic communication.
This case study shares how we designed the Allurion app to empower users with real-time insights, personal support, and tools to stay on track.
My Impact
As the lead product designer, I partnered closely with product and
engineering throughout the project. I led design across all phases, including:
Running a week-long design sprint to align on the MVP
Designing end-to-end UX and UI across iOS and Android
Leading stakeholder workshops and design reviews
Mapping user flows, creating wireframes, and prototyping
Designing health device pairing and HealthKit integration
Collaborating on usability testing and continuous iteration
The Problem
The Allurion experience offered strong tools — including a connected scale, tracker, and medical support.
However, the app wasn’t fully supporting users’ goals or creating a cohesive experience.
Tracking felt fragmented, making it difficult for users to see their overall progress.
Coaching access was unclear, leaving users unsure of how to get help or guidance.
Clinic communication lacked structure, creating inconsistencies in care and follow-up.
The challenge: build an app that connects all these touchpoints and delivers a more personal, guided experience for every user.
Our approach
We reimagined the Allurion app as a connected hub for the entire weight loss journey.
From goal setting and progress tracking to personalized coaching and in-app telehealth visits, the new experience helps users feel supported every step of the way.
Our process
Kicked off with a design sprint to align on goals, define the MVP, and quickly prototype core concepts. I worked on setting up the 4 day sprint with our core team and we’ve came up a long way by starting this project with a design thinking workshop.

Our sprint focused on this challenge:
How might we build a way for balloon users to be more successful losing weight and maintaining their goal weights? And for medical providers to give them the support and help along the way?
Day 1 - We focused on understanding and defining unmet needs.
Day 2 - We moved on to brainstorming and prototyping our best ideas.
Day 3 - We tested our ideas with real users.
Day 4 - We focused on refining our concept and breaking it up into actionable sprints so we can deliver.
Conducted user research and usability testing to validate ideas and refine key flows.
Collaborated closely with stakeholders, meeting regularly to ensure alignment across design, product, and clinical teams.
Worked in two-week sprints, moving from design to development in iterative cycles.
Partnered closely with engineers, doing quick and early QA rounds to catch issues early and build with confidence.
Held weekly retros every Friday to reflect, learn, and continuously improve as we built the app from scratch.
Discovery Research
We spoke with users, coaches, and clinic staff to understand pain points.
These were the key insights:
Users needed real-time, visual feedback on progress
Device syncing was confusing and unreliable
Many didn’t know how or when to connect with a coach
There was high interest in AI-based support, if it felt human as there is a lot of shame around body image and some users prefer to be at the comfort of their home when they are getting this weight loss treatment.
We’ve came up with 3 personas for this product.
Entering The Design Phase
Entering The Design Phase
For Allurion’s weight-loss app and member + admin dashboard, I led the UX design efforts to make key actions—tracking progress, completing check-ins, messaging providers, and learning about healthy habits—feel seamless and motivating. I explored different navigation patterns to ensure these core features were intuitive and accessible, balancing user needs with technical feasibility.
I sketched, prototyped, and tested early flows with our product, clinical, and engineering teams to validate design decisions and ensure alignment before moving into high-fidelity work. Once our direction was solidified, I developed a clean, uplifting visual system that reflected Allurion’s brand values and promoted a sense of progress and confidence.
In close collaboration with our copywriter, I helped shape a tone that was empathetic, supportive, and goal-oriented—reinforcing the app’s focus on long-term behavior change and patient motivation.
Midway through the project, Allurion underwent a complete rebrand. I quickly adapted our designs to the new visual language, updating components, color systems, and layouts to maintain consistency and accessibility. This phase required close coordination with marketing, product leadership, and the CEO, teaching me to stay agile under shifting priorities while preserving design integrity and alignment across teams.
Visual Design & Content Collaboration
Once the UX was locked in, I led the visual design phase—balancing Brightside’s brand with mobile-first usability.
I collaborated closely with our copywriting & marketing team to ensure that our brand messaging was empathetic, clear, and supportive.
Together, we designed key features like:Real-time weight tracking synced with scale
Health app and Allurion Tracker integration (steps, sleep, activity)
Goal-setting tools for nutrition, exercise, and habits
Messaging with Allurion clinics and coaches
Personalized AI coaching with Coach Iris
Resource library for weight loss education
Landing pages for Allurion wearable device
Admin/account dashboard for Allurion admin team as well as providers

Final Thoughts
Designing the Allurion App from the ground up was an opportunity to bring together behavioral science, technology, and human connection in support of healthier lifestyles. From early research to high-fidelity design and QA, every decision was focused on creating a seamless and motivating experience for users on their weight-loss journey.
The result is an intuitive platform that connects people with their care team, syncs effortlessly with smart devices, and provides personalized support through AI coaching. This project reinforced the importance of designing with empathy and data in mind—building not just an app, but a trusted digital companion that helps people achieve lasting change.
